After a some time away from the driver’s seat, mixing his time between team management duties and his commercial role at Supercars, Craig Dontas will make a return to Darwin and to racing. But this time the race car won’t have a tray or look like a Ute, it will be an Aussie Racing Car.
Teaming up with his twin brother, this will be a totally new experience for the seasoned Ute and SuperUte campaigner, tackling the very fast, compact and competitive Aussie Racing Car Championship, at Darwin’s Hidden Valley Raceway.
‘I am super excited to get away and go racing, a new challenge and somewhere I can have some fun and concentrate on just the racing. I love the challenge of running the team and part-time driving in the SuperUtes, but this will purely be pleasure. My brother has organised it all to be honest, so literally he confirmed it whilst I was away on a family holiday, he said you’re going racing. It will be a cool thing having my twin brother as a team mate too.’ Dontas said.
Darwin has been a happy hunting ground for Dontas in the past with several podium finishes in the Australia V8 Ute Series, plus then his last time in the top end competing in the Stadium SuperTrucks.
'I love racing in Darwin, the weather the people and importantly the track, it has the longest straight in the country, so the high speed and flowing corners, it is such a cool place to drive. I am pretty nervous though, the Aussie Racing Car field is full of high class drivers, I haven't driven one of these thing since 2003 so it will be a baptism of fire. But I can't wait, I get to sit in my little rocket for the first time on Friday for the opening practice!’ Dontas said.
At this stage, Dontas is scheduled to complete in at least two Aussie Car events, Hidden Valley Darwin and The Bend South Australia, with backing from Nippy’s Fruit Juices & Milks, Bosch PowerTools, Total Tools, Blundstone, Torqit and Drivetech 4x4.
There is potential for more but for now this is a great fit to the current schedule.
‘I have some great support with a big welcome to Nippy’s, another great South Australian company with a national foot print, I grew up drinking Nippy’s juice and milk, I still love a sneaky Iced Coffee for morning tea haha plus some of our great partners from the SuperUte team have also jumped on board with some great support. I can't wait to get racing!’
The Hidden Valley event takes place on June 14 – 16, you can catch all the action on Fox 506 and Network 10.
